I have recently been commissioned to build a 10-string classical guitar. Below are some photo's of my progress and the finished guitar.
Soundboard : AAA Western Red Cedar
Back and Sides : AAA Indian Rosewood
Fingerboard : 1st grade African Ebony
Neck : Spanish Cedar
Bridge: Indian Rosewood
All the raw materials in a pile!
The soundboard and back after thicknessing, fitting the rossette and profiling, as well as the completed bridge and profiled and slotted fingerboard.
The completed soundboard, based on the standard Ramirez 1966 model. I have recessed the lower harmonic bar and the cross bar to allow the longer fan struts to extend further onto the upper bout. I believe this will add a little extra stiffness to counter the tension from the additional strings. I have also lengthened and widened the bridge pad to help support the longer and slightly wider bridge. I have sealed it with a coat of shellac, leaving the glueing areas uncoated. These areas will be sealed after installation.
Dimensions:
Soundboard: 2.45mm thick (to be taken slightly thinner on the outer edge of the lower bout after installation)
Back: 2.20mm thick
Sides: 2.00mm thick
Bridge pad: 0.75mm thick
Fan struts: 4mm wide x 5.5mm high
Harmonic bars and cross bar: 6.5mm wide x 13mm high.
Bridge: 31mm wide x 204mm long. String spacing = 11mm
The lower harmonic bar and cross bar have been recessed to allow for the longer fan struts.
Some of the completed items, except for the back that still needs supports.
The neck fitted with graphite reinforcement.
